Research Topics

The common element among the research activities is the numerical modeling, mainly adopted following the approaches of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to study reactor configurations, and those of the Bifurcation Theory, for the study of nonlinear stability of simplified configurations, with contributions in the development of numerical methods too.

The fields of investigation regard the combustion of gaseous mixtures (studies on the stability of gas turbine combustors and  on industrial and civil safety), the multiphase fixed bed combustors (development of fireplaces and stoves), entrained bed combustors (development of the IGCC gasifiers), and fluidized-bed combustors (development of cogeneration systems powered by renewable sources).

More recent is the interest in the development, including experimental activities, of innovative solutions for the distributed cogeneration from renewable sources and in the characterization of the chemical kinetic of the combustion of new generation fuels.

The research projects in which Franco Marra is currently involved are:

  • Megaris – distributed micro-cogeneration powered by biomass and CSP
  • AdP MiSE-CNR – Slagging Gasifiers for clean coal combustion
  • UFWM - Ultra Fine Water Mist technologies for fires prevention

Biographical Notes

Francesco Saverio Marra (Franco, born in 1964) graduated in Aeronautical Engineering in 1992 with highest honors from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II. After participating in training programs at CNR, in 1998 she obtained the title of Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from the same University. In the same year he became Permanent Researcher with the IRC-CNR. Since 2008 he collaborates with the University of Sannio with teaching assignments for the courses “Analysis and Simulation of Chemical Processes”, “Laboratory of Numerical Computing” and “Analysis and Simulation of Combustion Processes”, this position currently held. In 2006 and 2008 he was a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Politecknika Lodka in Poland, in charge of a projects in the framework Marie Curie ToK program within the European Community.

The scientific and technical skills acquired include the transport mechanisms that govern the phenomena of combustion and their stability, the numerical methods for the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for reacting flows, the methods and tools of High Performance Computing.

He was Co-Chair of the 24 ICDERS (International Colloquium on the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems).

Since 2012 he is a member of the Board dell'IDERS (www.icders.org) and is a reviewer for over 20 international scientific journals.
